Is It Friday Yet?

January 25, 2013

This blog post may be a bit of a continuation of yesterday's blog but with a bit of a different take.  Yesterday I wrote about running on auto pilot.  That is when you kind of zone and just go through your day without really paying attention.

Today's blog is more about racing through life and hurrying to get to the weekend.  I was listening to the Country music radio station here in the Okanagan and heard a song titled is it Is It Friday Yet by Gord Bamford.  It got me thinking about why so many people seem to be in such a hurry to get through the week to get to the weekend.  Now don't get me wrong,  I really enjoy my weekends too.  Extra time with friends and family is great, but I want to encourage everyone to enjoy their weekdays too.  And how much you enjoy your week is completely up to you.

The things is... we have a limited amount of time here,  I like how on the weather reports on the local news they give birthday wishes to local residents that are more than 100 years old.  It a great thing to live to 100 if you have a great quality of life.  But 100 years is not a long time.  If we continue to strive to rush through our week just to get to the weekend we miss out on 5 days that can be great.

When people tell me they hate Mondays I remind them that if it weren't for Mondays ... Fridays wouldn't be so good.  The truth is everyday at midnight you have just invested 24 hours you will not get back.  24 hours that could in fact be fantastic, whether at work or play.  And you have 24 fewer hours to make the most of your life.  It really doesn't matter what kind of work you do to support yourself and your loved ones.. it doesn't matter if (up until now) you hate your work.  You have heard this before... when you change your mind you change life,  you can change your mind and make your work more enjoyable.

There is always some good that comes out of what people do, of what you do.  If you are an accountant it's more than just numbers...you likely give peace of mind and to all sorts of people that are stressed over their financial situation. If you are a server in a restaurant or a sales person you likely find solutions to people problems, whether they are hungry or need new shoes.   There is always some good that comes out of the work people do and helping others is a great thing.

Enjoy everyday, they all can and should be great days.  Is it Friday yet?  Who cares?... it's your day!!
