Maybe I'm A Dreamer

So yesterday in Canada it was a day that everyone was supposed to wear a pink shirt to bring awareness for what is a very serious and even fatal problem.. Bullying.

I participated in the day with a pink shirt and throughout the day saw several others. There was not as much participation as I thought there would be, but the movement is still relatively young and I am sure it will grow. It did provide an opportunity for me to talk to several people about the bully issue... and virtually everyone I talked had been bullied in one form or another at some point in their lives. I had been bullied in school and also have worked for some managers and business owners that are bullies. So I am no stranger to the issue. Today however with the Internet, the issue has changed.

Although I do see the value in a day like this, I do have a small question about the day and I have written about this in previous blog postings. The best way to address my question is to share a quote from Mother Teresa.

"I was once asked why I don't participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I'll be there." - Mother Teresa

Most of the chatter I had with people was about our experiences with bullies, there was really not a lot of talk about how to solve problem and I am not saying I have the answer. I do think the focus has to change. As with anti war rallies and pro-peace ... the focus must change from bullying to ... "let's all get along". I know that seems simple but if we had a day that was a" let's all get along day" we could cover a lot of ground, It would include wars, racism. violence against women, bullying and a whole range of other issues that we face. Maybe if for one day we all got along we would learn something about each other than we hadn't known before. Maybe we would see how much alike we really are. Maybe real change could happen out of a mutually understanding that we are all facing challenges and need each to solve them. I will throw in a quote from John Lennon here....

You, may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one.

I know some will say each issue needs to have it's time in the spotlight and we need at least one day dedicated to address each serious issue. But I think addressing the solution rather than the problem will get us where we want to be a lot faster. And each serious issue has one common solution... let's all get along.

Maybe I am a dreamer... but I am Okay with that.
